Who we are

I have always thought it humorous when small Iowa towns give themselves grandiose town slogans. Beaman Iowa (population 173) has the slogan “You’re not dreamin. You’re in Beaman.” La Porte City Iowa claims, “All trails lead to La Porte City, Iowa.” Ironically there is only one highway that leads to La Porte City. Some towns are much more modest such as Alta which simply claims it is “A nice place to call home.”

Churches can be just in grandiose in their slogans or vision statements. Many of these slogans seem like a string of hip words or phrases to grab people’s attention and make them want to attend that church. Words like relevant, casual, contemporary, impactful, authentic, community, and real are often used to describe services.

The Journey’s slogan, “fellow travels on the road of life.” much like the town of Alta Iowa, may seem pretty modest. But honestly, no matter how hard we try to be authentic, relevant, real, impactful, or any other trendy word, we are just people who are coming together with the common goal learning from and leaning on each other as we journey. And while sometimes we will be inauthentic, uptight, unreal, and maybe even judgmental, we still need each other. That is why we gather.  Our hope is that together we can each be taking steps toward Jesus as he leads us all on the Journey he has for us.
